Traditionally, Buddhists take refuge in the Buddha, in dharma (the teachings), and in sangha (the community of practitioners). Taking refuge is to awaken from confusion and align oneself with wakefulness. By taking refuge, we vow to commit ourselves to freedom and following the truth.
In this meditation series, we will be seeking our inner refuges of peace and calm that are always within us. This is a skillful practice to reorient ourselves to our path and reaffirm our sacred connection to the world. Seeking refuge in this way is a simple way to make our trust conscious and connect to our faith.
Zen ancestor Huang Po said, “Your true nature is something never lost to you, even in moments of delusion, nor is it gained at the moment of enlightenment. It is the nature of your own mind, the source of all things, your original luminous brilliance. You, the richest person in the world, have been going around laboring and begging, when all the while the treasure you seek is within you. It is who you are.”
