The relationship between Hatha Yoga & Chair Yoga

The upcoming chair yoga series (August 2-30) is really special for a few reasons!

Let me name a few:

  • Short, bite-sized practices to fit into any schedule

  • Accessible for the whole crew (kids and elders too!)

  • Each practice is themed with intention

Series Focus: Warm Up for Action

Our practices will of course, involve the movement or action of the physical body mainly from a seated or resting position, with some standing options included.

What is the relationship between Hatha yoga and Chair yoga?

The purpose of Hatha Yoga is often misconstrued as preparing oneself with movement before the addition of subtle elements.

Actually, the term Hatha is used because it is a compound devised from ha and tha, two bija mantras. Here ha represents prana / vital life force and tha represents mind - the mental energy.

Hatha means the union of pranic and mental forces.

When this occurs there is an awakening of higher consciousness.

In our chair based yoga practices, we'll aim to discipline the body through the lens of hatha yoga where the disciplining of the body is explained as purification of the subtle elements or tattwas, and the energy channels or nadis.

By preparing ourselves in our chair based practices we will work toward the main objective of hatha yoga which is to create an absolute balance of the interacting activities and processes of the physical body, mind, and energy.

If our objective is achieved, the impulses generated give a call of awakening through the Sushumna Nadi or main centripetal energy vessel.

When this awakening is achieved, the human consciousness undergoes evolution.

Friend, this is what I mean when I saw Warm Up for Action.
